Rain forest and cloud on the mountains of the Crocker Range, surrounding theTenom
Valley. |
The town of Tenom is situated in the heart of the southern mountains of the Crocker
Range. Travelling to Tenom is usually to experience one or two things - the ride by rail car from the Beaufort railhead, through the Padas River Gorge, or, to include a visit to the Plant Preservation Centre, created by Englishman, Anthony Lamb. The town itself is well worth walking round, or sit at a pavement tea house and just watch Tenom life as it moves around you. The Preservation and Research Centre is a short drive outside the town and is like a miniature Kew Gardens - without the need for a tropical glasshouse! Here many plants from Malaysia, the rest of South East Asia and those from further afield undergo trials to assess their benefit as food, medicinal or utility crops. The Orchid Preservation Centre is well worth a visit. The remainder of the Centre is devoted to 'themed' areas, like the Japanese Garden; the Cactus Garden; the Hibiscus Garden, etc., and a very pleasant time can be spent amongst these beautiful areas. It is a plant lovers paradise. |
Phalaenopsis gigantea (above) and Phal. Bellina (right) are orchids native to only
the island of Borneo and can be seen at Tenom Orchid Centre. |
